I don't think you're being harsh. I made the mistake of installing the update as well, and then couldn't start the game at all. I deleted it from my iPod, and reinstalled it from my computer, and now it says I'm not connected to the internet (when I am), and wants me to create a new character! It's incredibly frustrating to have paid the money for the arena and to now not be able to play at all. I also share the frustrations of other players in regards to the lack of communication from the developers.
Well, I was frustrated too. I couldn't use it. At all. Just see my thread. So, I reinstalled it and opened it. I went a few steps, and got a d**n message that said something about it couldn't connect my devive and said that if I had A.F. 2: The Arena I didn't need this game. LOL. Well, another reinstall, opened it, it asked for my password, and now it works beautifully.

I payed $7.99 for an unplayable game? Lovely.
I just installed the update you released (Dec 29, 2008)
Now, I get this message:
"The Aurora Feint servers are experiencing difficulty with your Apple device. If you have Aurora Feint II: The Arena, you do not need this game. (wtf!!??) If you have never played Aurora Feint II: The Arena with this device please try again later."
What the heck??
Mind you that I do NOT have The Beginning installed and am only trying to play The Arena.
