did anyone ever think of a fake number/email address? i entered nbnb@example.com and 0123456789 when roar now addy me to his phone book (nbnb, nbnb@example.com, 0123456789) and i add him (roar, roar@roar.roar, 12345) we will be connected without knowing each others real phone number (but this doesn't fix the problem that your whole contact list is uploaded)

Yeah, i actually entered a fake number/email too because the only other person I know playing this game is my dad, so I just told him to put my fake info into his contacts. I didnt see the big deal in asking for phone numbers, Im pretty sure they woulda sold them by now if they were really out to do so

This is irresponsible but forgivable. Sending my contact info with my permission is one thing, sending my entire contacts list is not acceptable, even encrypted. I hope that is something we can turn off without losing the ability to add friends.
Also hopefully, since I've never tried to use the online functions I hope that it hasn't sent my contact information out yet and I won't have to worry.

So there was an app a few days ago called FriendBook, it's by the makers of Twinkle and Tap Tap Revenge. It was basically a Contacts app that let you send out a card you designate to a nearby users. To test it I made a another contact for myself, I had one already but it has info like my personal email and website (Only my family and closet friends know them) so I made a new contact with just my name and my public email. It ended up being pulled an hour later because the app was sending the contact to strangers! Anyways, because of this I am now on my own friend list, haha. I just never made the connection that you can just spoof all that info. Good find!

Easy solution: In the community feature, simply add a box that you have to tick in order for the feature to work. The box will say:
I agree to upload my email and phone number as entered above, and to upload the contents of my contact list, for the SOLE PURPOSE OF LOCATING MY FRIENDS, to the Aurora Feint servers, which will be stored for a short period of time, to a maximum of -- hours, and will be securely deleted afterwards.

How is this different that voluntarily giving your webmail credentials to social networking site so they can scour your contacts and see if anyone you know is already a member of their service? People are making it sound like it's this unbelievable notion to give up a contact list so matches can be found...AF is definitely not pioneering this idea.
As long as it's just an option, then everyone should just stop complaining.
P.S. I feel for you guys, I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to do all this work for the love of the community and the game, just to have people doubt your motives. Don't let these people ruin a good thing. There's a lot of us behind you!!

I'm a big fan of the game and think that the developers are doing a great job. I avoid anything that "scours" my contact lists without giving me the option. I know it's not a new idea, I just don't participate in that sort of activity. Call it an occupational paranoia due to my profession. I just like having options when it comes to how much data I share and when. I'd like to be able to do the whole online friends portion without having to share out my entire contacts list. Just a request for the option, never intended to make it sound like I was bashing them. A lot of people use the term "I don't understand" online and mean it like "You're doing this wrong and I disagree" I actually meant that I didn't understand in the sentences where I used that term

The very sad fact is that now Apple will make an example out of AF. As much as I hate to admit it I'll bet it will be some time until we get the update. This "bad press" will be linked directly to the success of the iPhone and the app store by the news media. It may take days for them to find the story but they will and it will be bad for AF. I truly love the game, however, this was a mistake and I think we will see what apple will do to cool free projects that get bad press.

Apple won't make an example of this, there's actually very little "press" on this. It's mostly one article that has since been rebuked.
The developers responded very quickly and appropriately to the concerns and have modified the update to reflect better security. If Apple gives them any special attention I'd be willing to bet it will be positive by pointing out how quickly they responded to a concern and how "this is an example of how the process works and how smoothly developers can respond to community requests and concerns with the iPhone Application Store".
This is more a chance for a good PR move than a witch hunt for Apple, we won't see any negative backlash from the big fruit.

We didn't even know if AF would be popular, so spending an extra week (out of 10!) to make it "scale proof" was something we opted to not do. I could have told you it would be popular. There are only a few free games, and there are people out there (like me) who download all of them. And you made it such a nice game. Also, I didn't know it took you guys 3,628,800 weeks to make this game. That's almost 70,000 years.

Yeah but they also need to add a way to add friends without clicking that box...

Don't let these people ruin a good thing. There's a lot of us behind you!! One difference is that it wasn't explicitly stated what they were doing. It wasn't even sent securely. And I would argue that giving your gmail password and contacts to someone is bad too. It doesn't matter how apathetic you are to having your contacts sent; it's not your private information at stake, it's everyone in your contact list's. Even if the concerns may be unfounded and Jason and Danielle can be trusted, your contacts have the right to have their information kept private.
