So I can pretty much confirm that AFtB crashes when two tool blocks are aligned vertically. I had been taking screenshots of the screen when it stalls and all of those screenshots have a tool block in the bottom visible row with another tool block just below it (in the partially visible row). Still not sure two tool blocks can be on top of another in other parts of the game but I'm not sure I'll try it. Two tool blocks can be used at the same time, though, when they're not aligned.
So a kind of workaround is to use tools as soon as possible. Doesn't allow for very complex tool use, but it's better than losing a complete game.

Finally managed to avoid the tool block crash long enough to level up. Not at all easy, actually. It feels like disarming a bomb. The best way would probably be to never pull new rows but the game is way too slow this way. I did crash twice in the same mining session (dreameater+sorcerer and strategist+timestopper). The most efficient way I've found so far to recover when a crash happens (on iPod touch): * Press the home button. * Hold the home and power buttons long enough to get a hard restart. * Start AF: crash to home during startup screen. * Start AF again: crash to home with summary or resume shown. * Start AF a third time: playable.
One thing I haven't figured out, yet, is what the best strategy is to save the current state. Pretty much everything I've tried, I always lose something when I recover from a crash. Under the conditions, it'd be soooo much easier if there were save and load buttons!

The only way that I've found to save the current state is to start mining, then stop mining and return to the map.
