Just a note, I know it's possible to disable backups via terminal on a Mac - unfortunately I'm using Vista!
I'm trying to upgrade to v2.1, however the backup process (which is mandatory for updates, no way to skip it) is taking forever. At this rate I calculate 5-7 hours until it's done backing up!
Does anyone know any ways to stop it backing up and just install the update, or to speed up the backup process?
Thanks!

If you can manage to get through it once, the backup process has been fixed in 2.1.
What used to take me over an hour (even longer if not done often), now takes seconds!

Plus, skipping a backup before a firmware update is a really, REALLY bad idea.

Your might not want to do this, but I just did a complete restore for my ipod. The update was quick, but it took a few minutes to put all of my apps onto it. The only reason I did this was because I had done a backup earlier that day, so it had all of my files on my computer. After that, the backups were a lot faster, and didn't take half an hour, like they did prior to the update.
