A lot of times I get crashes on startup. It starts the splash screen, and then quits. In the console I can see the loading of images and sounds at the beginning, and then this:
Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown iMmo[530] <Error>: iMmo(530,0x3940f7e0) malloc: *** mmap(size=1728057344) failed (error code=12)\n*** error: can't allocate region\n*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: iMmo(530,0x3940f7e0) malloc: *** mmap(size=1728057344) failed (error code=12) Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: *** error: can't allocate region Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc' Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: what(): St9bad_alloc Sat Jul 12 15:36:54 unknown UIKitApplication:com.youweb.iMmo[0x3f32][530] <Notice>: Creating onRTTIRepository
This happens on my iPod Touch (the log is longer, but I think this is the interesting part).

Yup, same problem -- works once, then crashes after splash screen. Great game, though.

On my old iPhone, it crashes out to the menu about 7-8 seconds into the loading screen.

Hey Guys,
This is related to letting the device lock and the coming back in most likely. Its fixed in the infamous release I keep talking about. Love the crashlog post!
Thanks Danielle

Please rush an update out for this problem asap even if it's the only thing you fix, this is really killing me.
I can't tell you how in love with your game I am, it's completely blown me away. Now that I've played it I would be happy to donate or pay for it or a new version, I'm completely in love with it.
SO in love, in fact, that I have now re-downloaded and re-installed it 3 times, because as soon as it's downloaded/installed, I can play it for as long as I want, until I hit the home button and exit it. Once I do that, I get this splash screen crash, and can never play it again until I delete, redownload, reinstall.
This issue is really making one of your biggest fans very sad, because all I want to do is play AF, and it's just too much of a hassle at this point.
I implore you to get this bugfix out in the next few days (hours?!) and restore this game to the pinnacle of praise, where it belongs!

If anyone gets a crash bug that makes it so that they restart the game and get playing, please try uninstalling and reinstalling. Let me know if this fixes anything. Your game data is stored remotely so you shouldn't lose data (no promises, but you shouldn't).

update: I've never been able to get the game past the loading screen. Not even once. Uninstalling didn't make a difference for me.

pwamh: That sounds like trouble! What device are you using? Are you using the official iPhone 2.0 OS or did you install the zip file that mac rumors had posted earlier? I've heard reports of people who updated before Apple officially released it and saw errors like that. Have you ever created a character in the game?

Hi Jason, I'm using an 8GB "old" iPhone (not 3G). It's never been jailbroken, unlocked from AT&T, or loaded with unofficial software. I updated first thing Friday morning (7AM Pacific) from iTunes on a Mac. I've never made a character or got further than the loading screen. I tried deleting+reinstalling and powering off the phone but nothing makes a difference.
Here's the tail of my console log:

I got it working. I had to do an OS restore (wipe the phone). Restoring my data caused it to fail again though. I was able to skip the data restore and sync all my data back. A couple other game saves that were lost but I'm fine with that (other folks might not be).
Possibly another bug that will affect folks restoring their phones: After the first OS restore, before I restored data, I loaded AF and made a character that I played for a few minutes. After I restored it stopped working so I restored the OS again and just synced my data back. It didn't find my character so I had to make a new one.

I also had the crash on startup after my device locked. I turned off my iPhone completely and then turned it back on. The app then started with no problems.

Yea crash on lock is a known bug, and restarting the phone should fix it just fine! This problem is fixed in the next release.

First I wanted to let both Jason and Danielle, you guys rule. You really developed an amazing game here, and it's unbelievable that you put this out to the public for free. Great work, I really look forward to supporting games you develop in the future.
BUT, I am also crashing on start up, but it's not related to my phone locking. If I reinstall the game will boot up fine, but my previous game data is lost and I have to create a new account. Plus, if I close the game it will crash on the splash screen until I reinstall. Restarting my phone or restoring my firmware will not fix the issue. Only deleting it off of my phone and resyncing.
I'm on an 8gb iPhone 3g version 2.0 (5A327).
