lol jailbreaking the iphone is one of the best things one could do..sadly im still under the bondage of the evil dictator leader known as apple (steve jobs) Once you jailbreak it make sure you download crayon physics...that game is amazing to the tenth power.

I might be a bit late on this, but being a mobile phone salesman by trade (unfortunately...) I'd like to think my opinion might count for something. Maybe. Anyway, I think the iPhone is a fantastic piece of kit. I use it far more than I have any previous device, more than the XDA/PDA handsets, and certainly more than the Nokia N95. As a phone, it works wonderfully, and picks up very clear signal. Sound quality is great on calls, and my texts are, oddly enough, actually being recieved in America (I'm in the uk) within 5 minutes of it being sent. Which is pretty good, they occassionally suffered major slowdown on the N95. I love the music function, the video player, the web browser, emails, youtube links, heck, even the scientific calculator is a nice touch! But I simply think that the iPhone is the most customisable handset available in terms of applications. Sure, you could download apps to the N95, but the iPhone makes it so much simpler, quicker, and fun! It's a great piece of kit, well worth getting. There is only one thing I'm not 100% keen on, and that's the camera. It's pretty good for a 2mp, but it might be nice to see a video recording function on there. That doesn't bother me much though, I barely use the video recording function, and I still have my N95 for my heavy duty camera needs anyway! So, that's my 2 cents.

I swore up and down I would never get an IPhone or anything Apple for that matter. After winning the IPhone in a raffle, I decided to give it a try. I canceled my Sprint Contract and signed up with AT&T. Best move I have ever done....not only did I get a better phone I also got an upgrade in Customer Service with AT&T. I never realize how much Sprint was screwing me until I switched to AT&T. As far as the IPhone goes the only thing I wish it has was MMS. I keep hoping an update will change that. YOU WON YOUR iPHONE IN A RAFFLE??? Then again, I technically got my iPod touch for free too.

You said that you already have an IPod touch, as I understand it's almost like an IPhone but without the phone feature.
Before buying an IPhone you need to make a decision if you will make use of the phone and other features that you don't have in the touch. Iphone is not just a phone, it's an investment (considering that ti will cost you an extra $30 to use the new 3G one). Of course you can opt-out of the Data plan but then it doesn't make sence to buy an IPhone in the first place.
Here are my thought on why I need and IPhone and will never trade it for anything else:
1. Unprecedented Apple design and approach to device user friendliness. 2. Email (with Exchange support which allowes me now to Sync my Contacts and Calendars wirelessly without even using MobileMe) 3. Google Maps anywhere you want them (helped me even more than my portable GPS several times) 4. Safari (I don't use it too often but when I do it's extremely handy) 5. Wi-FI support for WPA Enterprize (with 2.0 update) I am now on my corporate Wi-Fi network so I have Wi-Fi at home and at work for 6. Other perks through a bunch of free apps like: Movie listings, restaurants, events in my area (meaning the area I am currently IN) Notes synchronized wirelessely with my PC And many many more.
Now I have a 1st generation IPhone, so I only pay $20 for my Data Plan and see absolutely no reason to switch to new one, but here at my work a bunch of people already got the new ones and very happy.
I suggest you to create your own list of needs and compare it to the list of features that an IPhone will add to your life nd then decide if it worth the money.
Good luck.
I know a guy who does some development for Apple and he sai that they are aware that 2.0 is buggy but there wil be updates and eventually they will make it perfect, like most Apple products.
I crave Apple laptop now, I want to develop for IPhone but it's kinda hard to come up with an extra $1000+ to get a MAC...

it's basically like getting a new phone every 6 months with all the extra updates and what not.

Really the iPhone sells itself doesn't it? There really is no other gadget out there that feels quite as slick and high tech (imo). I'm sure that there's going to be update fixes within the next 6 months or so (look at us now, a year on and already on the 7th/8th software update for the iPhone).

There are other advantages of the iPhone over the iTouch--
External speaker Mic Physical volume controls Device convergence (for those that need a phone anyway)

yeah totally true...it's just amazing what apple is capable of...too bad they can't make plastic that's resilient to cracks worth crap.

No, seriously. They don't manufacture their own plastic. They have "people" for that.
In this case, it would seem that maybe they need to find new people.

Interesting that the problems are only showing up on the white versions. Now anyone that's ever played with lego will know that white plastic is incredibly difficult to make. Sounds like something is weakening the white plastic.
I'm sure Apple will get it sorted as they've acknowledged the problem and have said they're working to resolve it.
Real pain in the rear if it happens to your phone, but I always thought black was classier anyway.

Regarding the iPhone, since that's the point of the thread, as an iPhone owner, I cancelled my old contract to move to O2 and get the iPhone. Now my old phone was on its last legs so it was a fairly easy decision. I didn't think I would use the features of the phone like the iPod (as I had an iPod) or the PDA (I had one of those too) or email, web, maps, etc.
And now that I've had one for 6 months (and have just upgraded to the 3G version) I love it. I use the phone far more than I ever thought I would and find that it's just so much more usable having all the functionality in the one device.
I now actually add the stuff I have to remember into the calendar (as my memory is naff), I can listen to my tunes on the train on the way into work, email photos to my friends, check out the delays to the trains and now I can play games and even have a planetarium on my phone. Superb!
I really can't recommend the phone enough. Even my wife who was skeptical when I bought it loves the phone and now has my old 1st gen iPhone.
They are fantastic devices with one of the most intuitive interfaces I've ever used in a phone. I think I'll find it hard to replace this one when it eventually comes time.
